Tree surgeon in Dereham

Dereham, historically East Dereham, is the Breckland market town that calls itself the Heart of Norfolk, sitting on the A47 west of Norwich. Foundation Garden & Trees is based in Brandon, and Craig takes enquiries here for tree work, hedges, garden care and fencing. Tell him what has changed in the garden, what you want to keep and how the working area is reached.

A Georgian centre with older survivors

Fires in 1581 and 1679 destroyed many of Dereham's medieval buildings, which is why the centre around the Market Place, High Street and Wright's Walk has a largely Georgian look. A few older survivors remain, such as the pargetted Bishop Bonner's Cottage from the late 1500s, and the Grade I listed parish church stands beside Saint Withburga's Well. Gardens close to buildings like these are often enclosed, reached through a passage, and hemmed in by walls that need protecting while branches come out.

Before pruning or felling near the historic core, check with Breckland District Council whether a Tree Preservation Order or conservation controls apply. Our tree surgery page explains how pruning, crown work and removal are chosen.

Larger plots across Breckland

Across Breckland, 46.8% of homes are detached, 29.7% semi-detached, 16.0% terraced and 7.0% flats (Census 2021). Out along Norwich Road, past the East Dereham Windmill of 1836, and through the NR19 wards of Neatherd, Toftwood and Withburga, that often means a bigger garden with longer boundaries. Hedge cutting and regular garden maintenance suit those plots well.

Newer housing, such as the Maltings development by the Mid-Norfolk Railway station, brings new-build gardens that start with bare ground: a lawn to lay, a boundary to put up and a patio area to plan. Fencing and turf are usually the first jobs on a plot like that.

Practical details worth planning for

Much of rural Breckland is off the gas grid: 23.7% of homes across the district heat with oil only, against 49.5% on mains gas only. An oil tank needs a clear, safe route for deliveries, and many owners want it screened from the house without blocking access.

Dereham's Anglian Water supply is rated very hard, so limescale builds up on pumps, fountains and irrigation fittings. If you are thinking about a water feature, an easy-maintenance design is the sensible choice.

  • Oil tank screening with delivery access kept clear
  • Low-maintenance water features for hard water
  • Turf and fencing for new-build plots

Dereham questions

Answers before you call

Is Dereham the same place as West Dereham?

No. West Dereham is a separate village. This page is about the market town of Dereham on the A47 in mid-Norfolk.

Can an oil tank be screened without blocking deliveries?

Yes. Screening can be planned around the tank so the delivery route and access stay clear. Describe where the tank sits when you send photos.

Is a water feature a good idea with Dereham's hard water?

It can be, but very hard water leaves limescale on pumps and fittings, so a simple design that is easy to clean is the practical option.
