A routine trim takes back the season's growth to the line the hedge already has. The face is cut straight, the top is kept level and slightly narrower than the base so light reaches the bottom, and corners are kept square or rounded to match. Done at the right point in the year, a trim keeps a hedge dense and stops it creeping outwards a little more every season.
When a hedge has outgrown its space, the job becomes a reduction: taking height off the top and width off the sides, sometimes by a metre or more. Tall hedges are worked from platforms and steps set up safely on the ground, and the cut is planned so the hedge can green up again. Some plants, such as Leylandii, will not regrow from bare brown wood, so Craig will explain how far each hedge can be taken back before you decide.
Hedge cutting produces a lot of material. Sheets go down to catch what falls, beds and lawns underneath are raked through, and the clippings are loaded and taken away rather than left in bags for you to deal with.
Most hedges are trimmed once or twice a year between late spring and early autumn, with fast growers needing more. Hedges are checked for nesting birds before cutting in spring and summer, and heavy reductions are often best left until autumn or winter.
