Hedge cutting prices in Suffolk and Norfolk

Written by Craig, Foundation Garden & Trees

Hedge cutting is priced on the time the hedge takes and the waste it produces, not on a flat rate per metre. This guide explains what pushes a price up or down locally.

Most domestic hedges are quoted as a half day or full day of work.

Waste removal is often a third of the total on an overgrown hedge.

Height above ladder reach changes the equipment and the price.

How hedge cutting is actually priced

A trimmer only touches the hedge for part of the visit. The rest is sheeting down, setting up safe access, clearing arisings and loading them. That is why two hedges of the same length can be quoted very differently.

For a routine garden hedge kept in shape each year, a single visit is usually a couple of hours including the tidy up. A hedge left for three or four seasons takes longer and produces far more waste, so it sits in a different bracket.

  • Length and both faces, plus the top
  • Finished height and how far it has to come down
  • Access for a platform, tripod ladder or tower
  • Volume of arisings and where the vehicle can park
  • Whether cuttings are taken away or stacked on site

Cheaper choices that still look right

Leaving arisings on site, where you have space for a habitat pile or your own green bin, takes a real cost out of the job.

Booking a repeat cut also lowers the price per visit, because a maintained hedge never reaches the heavy reduction stage again.

What a proper quote should tell you

You should see the finished height and width written down, whether the top is being levelled, who is removing the waste and whether the price covers one face or both.

Send a photo taken from each end of the hedge along with your postcode. That is usually enough for an accurate estimate without a site visit.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Is hedge cutting priced per metre or per hour?

In practice it is priced by time and waste. A per metre figure ignores height, access and how overgrown the hedge is, which are the things that actually decide how long the job takes.

Does the price include taking the cuttings away?

It should be stated either way. We quote with removal included by default, and we can reduce the price if you are happy to keep the arisings on site.

Is a tall conifer hedge more expensive than a privet hedge?

Usually yes. Conifer and Leylandii reductions need working at height, produce dense heavy waste and often need a second pass to get a clean face.

Do you charge extra for a first cut on a neglected hedge?

The first restoration cut costs more than the maintenance visits that follow, because it is slower work with far more material to clear.

Can you quote from photographs?

Yes. A photo from each end, a rough length and your postcode give us enough for an initial figure, confirmed on the day before any cutting starts.
