Garden maintenance contracts for homes and commercial grounds

Written by Craig, Foundation Garden & Trees

A maintenance schedule is only worth having if it says what happens, how often and who clears the waste. Here is what to insist on.

Growing season visits are usually fortnightly, winter visits monthly.

Waste removal should be written into the schedule, not assumed.

Commercial sites need insurance evidence and a named contact.

What a visit should include

A maintenance visit is more than mowing. On a well planned schedule, each visit has a defined list so nothing quietly stops happening after month three.

  • Grass cutting with edges trimmed and clippings handled
  • Hedge and shrub work at the right point in the year
  • Weed control on beds, paths and gravel
  • Seasonal tasks: leaves in autumn, cutting back in late winter
  • Waste removed by a registered carrier

Domestic and commercial differ

Private gardens are usually a fortnightly cut from March to October and a monthly winter presence. Schools, care homes, landlords and business parks need documented insurance, predictable timing and grounds that are safe and presentable every day.

For managed properties we set the year out in advance so the cost is known rather than arriving as a series of separate invoices.

Comparing two quotes properly

Check the number of visits, the months they run, whether hedge cutting is inside or outside the price, and who pays for waste. Those four things explain nearly every gap between two figures.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How often should a garden be maintained?

Fortnightly through the growing season keeps grass and beds under control. Monthly visits are usually enough from November to February.

Am I tied into a long contract?

No. Schedules run visit by visit and can be paused or adjusted. The plan is there for predictability, not to lock you in.

Is hedge cutting included in a maintenance plan?

It can be built into the annual schedule or quoted separately. We make clear which applies so there are no surprises in autumn.

Do you work for landlords and managing agents?

Yes. We cover multiple properties on one schedule with a single point of contact and consistent invoicing.

What happens to the green waste?

We remove it as registered waste carriers, unless you have space on site and would rather we composted it there.
