Autumn leaf clearance for gardens and commercial grounds

Written by Craig, Foundation Garden & Trees

Leaves are harmless for a week and a problem after a month. Clearing on a rhythm protects lawns, gutters, drains and car park surfaces.

A wet leaf mat can kill turf in three to four weeks.

Leaves on paving and steps are a genuine slip liability on commercial sites.

Two or three timed visits usually beat one big clear up.

What leaves actually do

On grass, a sealed wet layer shuts out light and traps moisture, which is how bald yellow patches appear by December. On hard surfaces, leaf mulch is slippery and holds water against the joints.

On commercial grounds, gulleys and channel drains are the first thing to block, and the resulting standing water is what people notice and report.

How we clear

Blowing into rows, collecting with a vacuum or rake, then lifting and removing. Gravel, borders and lawns are all handled differently so that stone and mulch stay where they belong.

  • Lawns, paths, driveways and parking areas
  • Borders and gravel, cleared without stripping the mulch
  • Gulleys, channel drains and gully grates cleared and checked
  • All leaf waste removed by a registered waste carrier

Scheduling through the season

For a garden with mature trees, visits in late October, mid November and early December cover the fall. Managed sites and care homes normally run fortnightly through the same period.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How often should leaves be cleared?

Every two to three weeks during the fall for a garden with mature trees, and fortnightly on commercial grounds where slip risk matters.

Can leaves be left on borders?

A thin layer on a border is good for the soil. It is lawns, paths and drains that need clearing, and that is where we focus.

Do you take the leaves away?

Yes. We are registered waste carriers and remove everything we collect unless you would prefer a leaf mould heap on site.

Do you do one off clearances as well as contracts?

Both. Many customers start with a single end of season clear up and move to scheduled visits the following autumn.
