Tree surgeon prices: what the work actually costs and why
Written by Craig, Foundation Garden & Trees
Tree surgery has no standard price list because no two trees present the same job. The cost reflects the size and condition of the tree, the risk around it, the access for getting branches and waste out, and the time the work takes. This guide explains the factors and points you to detailed guides for removal, pruning and stump grinding.

Price follows time and risk, not the height of the tree alone.
Access for getting waste out is often half the job.
A clear written quotation should say exactly what is included.
Why tree surgeons don't publish a price list
A hedge can be priced by the metre because hedges are broadly similar. Trees are not. Two trees of the same height can differ enormously: one standing alone on open lawn is a straightforward fell and clear; the same tree leaning over a conservatory, threaded through phone lines or squeezed between two gardens is a careful dismantle that takes far longer.
That is why reputable tree surgeons quote per job after seeing the tree, either in person or from clear photographs. A price given sight unseen over the phone for complex work is a guess, and guesses tend to grow once the saw starts.
The factors that move a price up or down
Every quote is built from the same handful of factors, weighted differently for each tree.
Size and spread: more tree means more cuts, more handling and more waste
Condition: dead, decayed or storm damaged wood behaves unpredictably and slows the work
What is underneath: buildings, greenhouses, fences and gardens all need protecting or working around
Access: a side gate dictates whether brash goes out by hand or by chipper at the kerb
Waste: chipping and removing arisings is a significant share of most jobs
Protection status: Tree Preservation Order or conservation area paperwork adds time before the work
Because the factors play out differently for each job type, we have written separate guides for the three most quoted kinds of tree work. Each one goes deeper than this overview.
For taking a tree down, read tree removal costs. For keeping a tree but reducing, lifting or thinning it, read tree pruning costs. For what is left behind afterwards, read stump grinding costs. If you have several jobs in mind, pricing them together as one visit usually works out better than separate call outs.
What a fair quotation looks like
A fair quote names the tree or trees, describes exactly what will be done to each, says whether the waste is chipped and removed or left, and states whether the stump is included. Vague descriptions like 'sort the trees' are where disagreements start.
Be cautious of anyone knocking on the door offering cheap tree work the same day, and of prices that only make sense if the waste is dumped rather than disposed of properly. A local tree surgeon who quotes in writing and explains what is included is easier to hold to the agreed work.
Getting a price for your tree
The quickest route to a real figure is a few photographs: the whole tree from a distance, the base, and whatever it overhangs, plus your rough location. Craig quotes each job individually from what he sees, and the quotation sets out the agreed work before anything is booked.

There is no standard figure because cost follows the size and condition of the tree, the risk around it, access and waste removal. Each job is quoted individually; our removal, pruning and stump guides explain the factors for each kind of work.
Why don't tree surgeons publish a price list?
Because two trees of the same height can be completely different jobs. What is underneath the tree, how waste gets out and the tree's condition all change the time involved, so honest pricing needs the tree to be seen first.
Is it cheaper to have several trees done at once?
Usually, yes. Set up, travel and waste removal are shared across the visit, so combining jobs in one booking typically costs less than separate visits.
Should a quote include removing the waste?
It should say clearly either way. Chipping and removing arisings is a significant part of most jobs, so a quote that is silent on waste can hide a large extra.
